Bounce Back From Home Water Damage With These Tips

Share :

Water damage in your home is a huge hassle. With these tips, you will get organized, to minimize the long-term effects of the water damage. That way, you can get on with your life.

Water damage in your home is a nightmare. The stress over destroyed possessions is enough to make anyone want to run and hide. Yet, hiding is the last thing you should do. When you are faced with flooding or other water damage in your home, you must act quickly to minimize the damage and limit the equipment and home furnishings you have to replace.

  • Move Quickly

The first thing you want to do is unplug any electronics and appliances. Electronic equipment presents an electrocution hazard as long as it remains in the water. If these tools are salvageable at all, you must take them away immediately. Then evaluate the rest of your belongings. Start with any crucial files, important papers and valuable family heirlooms. Then deal with your furniture. Move pieces out of the flooded area gently, aware of the fact that soaked furniture may be compromised and weak.

  • Water Removal

Next, you need to get the water out. Start with a submersible pump. You can attach a garden hose or a sump hose, but the bigger the hose, the faster the water removal. Once the water is mostly gone, switch to pulling the water out of carpets and rugs. A wet/dry vacuum works well for this purpose. If you have a lot of carpeting to dry, however, consider using a weighted extraction tool. Just remember to plug any machinery into outlets that are far away from the water damage.

  • Drying

You need to dry out the air at this point, to dry all the surfaces in the affected area. If the humidity is relatively low, open up the windows to let fresh air in. You should place dehumidifiers in the wetter parts to prevent mold from growing in the walls, floors and ceilings. Consider using a disinfectant or other agent to further discourage fungal growth.

Once your home is cleared and the damaged areas are clean, you can start to move on with your life. Replace what possessions you must, but preserve what you can. By working quickly after water damages your house, you will be surprised what you can save.
