Carpet Drying Is Key to Minimizing Effects of Water Damage

Share :

When it comes to water damage, one of the biggest areas to take the hit is your flooring. These tips help to get your carpet dry as quickly as possible, to avoid having to replace it.

When your house is flooded, the last thing you want to worry about is replacing the floor. Standing water may damage carpet in particular. To prevent water damage from destroying your carpet, follow these carpet cleaning tips to dry your floor quickly and efficiently.

  • Extracting Water

First, you must remove the water from your carpet. A submersible pump with a sump hose will clear the standing water quickly. Once most of the water has been removed, you are left with exceptionally wet carpet. A wet-dry vacuum or a residential carpet-cleaner will remove minimal amounts of water. For carpet that is seriously soaked, consider hiring a commercial water extractor. A weighted extraction tool is even more efficient at water removal and limits damage during the drying process. Plan to go over the entire carpet more than once to clear out as much water as possible.

  • Carpet Drying

Once you are satisfied that you have removed the water, you must dry the carpet and the carpet pad to minimize damage. Water clings to carpet fibers, so there is still water in the carpet, even after extraction. The trick is to ensure that the entire surface of the carpet is dry. Carpet dryers are effective in achieving this. For carpets that are tacked to the floor without a pad, carpet dryers may be placed immediately on top of the carpet to dry the carpet quickly and efficiently. To dry carpet pads, the carpet dryer must be positioned so that air blows over and under the carpet simultaneously. Using a weighted water extraction tool may eliminate this step. Finally, you should place dehumidifiers in the room to prevent excess moisture in the air from contributing to mold growth in walls and ceilings.

Carpet cleaning is enough of a chore without having to deal with water damage. Luckily, this process will minimize the long-term effects of flooding and save your flooring at the same time.
